As per Indian tradition in the early morning , women put rangoli in front of the house. Rangoli is an art form that is meant to produce positive energy for the home. The same tradition is being followed by my mother.

A tradition turned into a nightmare. One of the ocd type is Scrupulousity OCD. Scrupulousity OCD involves deep religious thoughts. There is a fear of doing any mistake that will make the person angry their respective God/Goddess.  It disrupts their mind when anyone goes against their ritual methods. Even the Pandits, Father or any superior person of religion will not agree with this person’s rituals. Such people will keep doing different remedies of overcoming sins repeatedly. In Hindu, there are long duration of different pujas and havans. So, the person will keep doing such puja havans every now and then. This person will not pray to God without taking bath. Even if the bath is already taken but the visit to temple or prayer to God is after few hours then the person will once again take bath prior to it. Similarly, christain person may repeatedly visit the confession room. In Muslim, while washing hands before the prayer, the person will wash his/her hands multiple times to feel the purity.
These people have strong belief in black magic. There is a fear of people doing black magic for which they find ways to protect themselves from black magic. Person with Scruplousity OCD will love preaching about God and religion to others. They want everyone to believe in their principles ,their thoughts, their rituals and follow the same.
Normally, only on occasions big rangolis or colourful rangolis are made.
But in my family, my mother started making big rangoli as compulsion for daily routine. Normal people clean the area by sweeping or they just use some cloth to wipe off the floor. Following it, they  make simple and small or border rangolis. My mother used to do same.

How the repetation and behavior changed?

The next step, she did is that she made me put big rangoli for complete month on every festival. Indians have so many festivals by which one can know the number of days of we designing rangoli are higher. Then she changed to putting big rangoli daily.
Alongside, her rule was sweeping and mopping only one time before putting rangoli.
Then during festival months,   (sweeping , mopping and put rangoli) twice a day.
The next thing , she started hallucinating that neighbour is doing some black magic.
She imagined ,neigbour drops Kumkum -a red powder or Angar- a grey powder on rangoli. Then she thought someone coming in front of our door daily from neighbour’s house and doing black magic. This is completely her hallucination.

How it got mixed with OCD?

She started cleaning front door and front place with dry cloth then wet cloth. She swept and mopped floor before rangoli. She changed timings of a day of putting rangoli so that neigbour don’t do black magic. It was all in her mind but she made real rules based on her beliefs. Then she forced us to create a window in the passage which is closer to the neighbour window.

Next level is this :

She sweeps the floor then mops the small floor 10 times and then cleans the beside little stone bench and door then mops the floor again . Then she cleans window with dry cloth then with wet cloth. Then she mops floor. Once again, she sprinkles water on the floor and wipes the floor with another cloth. Overall, total 4 clothes and sweeping rod , mop rod, and a bucket full of water only for this small matter.
She does not take bucket used for cleaning inside house . Because, she thinks goddess will enter house. Hence, dirt should not come inside. Therefore, the bucket should be taken inside home later after hours. You may have got confuzzled with this stanza of repeatative tasks. Imagine the same lines are actually acted in real, the amount of stress that goes around in doing the same task excess of time.
Since , Rangoli is a form of art ,  one could take this task positively and do it daily but the amount of stress involved with the Scruplousity OCD is unbearable. We have to avoid neighbour contact and if neigbour step out then she will think that they did black magic . Even if they don’t step out , she will still assume same because of her hallucination.

As previously explained, there is a fear of what will god or goddess do.
For example, she makes it compulsion to  draw shree symbol in rangoli without fail.
Moreover, throughout the process of rangoli, she is panicked and in  angry mood. Hence, anything going wrong triggers  her to create a worse day for all . All these beliefs increased the hallucination and she decided to leave this place to get rid of neigbour ‘s black magic(unreal thing. ) My mother has done unbearable dramas at home for this simple things. Her mind does not accept breakage in this repeation process and anyone against her such hallucinated beliefs. This thing has broken the relationship with good neigbour. We can’t face them or talk to them because she has restricted us. If we do so, then she will create an unforgettable trauma for all.

Please note, this post has no intention of saying anything against any religions. It is based on the sources, that explain how it can involve different religions. It is more about the OCD person and less about a religion. It only shows how a strong abnormal belief reaches higher than normal belief of god or goddess and supernatural things.

Know the things:

There is a need to take precautions. Don’t take the pattern changes of your loved ones lightly because with the development of symptoms , things get uncontrollable. It will lead to inviting more mental disorder symptoms. Each task is repeated multiple times. The person does not do  the work all alone  but asks some family members to do it. Please note that the ocd person does not enjoy doing such stress work. This stress work also affects their emotions and they feel frustrated to do it and at the same time avoiding work will give them a breakdown. This drains energy, valuable time for all family members and acts as an obstacle for other work or self time. Doing unnecessary work daily turns into an unavoidable stress for everyone. Because of one person’s mental imbalance, other family memebers eventually get mentally affected.

Society does not accept such levels of OCD. My neighbours make fun of us . When I tried explaining them first time about her other mental disorder . They denied to accept the term, mental disorder and said, “Your mother is a weird person.”.

We can’t tell every outsider, what mental disorder is!
We can only try our best to aware the world about mental health through different mediums.

To conclude, if we have symptoms then we should accept and meet doctors for the diagnose and respective treatment. In the same way, we should be understanding towards our family member’s any mental disorder and insist them to take the treatment.

Through this real story, you will understand why OCD (Obsessive-compulsive disorder) cannot be treated as a JOKE for everyone.

Introducing my mother who has two types of OCD.
Neither she takes the treatment nor do my family agree to give her treatment. My father and sister never agreed to give her treatment. Over years, I tried convincing her parents and siblings, even they denied giving any help .No one in my family agreed to opt for her treatment because they thought what will society say if they come to know about her. On another hand, her behavior became a problem for the society itself and yet father and sister did not wanted to take any responsibility. I once went with her to a doctor wherein she did not know her mental check up will also be done. We went for mild health check up and doctor said she does have mental disorders.
In the OCD series, I will not talk about her other mental disorders.
I will explain the experiences of living with a OCD person . In what way, people living with OCD person as well as the OCD person should take the responsibility of curing. Additionally, this is not only a single person OCD symptoms. There are many people out there who seem to have similar behaviour.

The Normal Day:

1] Where ever we stay: a bungalow or an apartment, the front yard of the house or the front passage of the flat needs to be cleaned daily. Even if the place is already cleaned, sweepping then mopping is done early morning around 6a.m. or prior to it. The doors are again cleaned with dry and wet clothes. Throughout the day: if anyone visits home, we go outside and come back, any random person walking in the passage or a courier person or any one else steps in the front passage, then those many times the front yard is cleaned. At the end of day, again in evening the sweeping is done compulsory.
She does not do it all alone always. Sometimes she does it by herself and sometimes she orders me to do it. We cannot avoid this task. Because the consequences of ignoring her orders are not good. She can get very emotional and hurt. She may get violent and have a heated conversation with all the bad words. This simple thing can change into one of the bad days.

One needs to know how to behave with a patient. Although people don’t really use the word patient for the person who has OCD. It is important for everyone to understand the person with any mental disorder and behave with them carefully.

This is the difference between a normal person reaction and the OCD person. The motive is to achieve their task of cleaning and if it undone then it does not give them a peace of mind.

The pattern of doing such an unnecessary task  every day without fail can become an obstacle in other work or for other family members.

It may sound a simple thing but when put into an action 365 days for more than decades, that would mean wasting time.

Cleaning front passage is acceptable :

  • When it is dirty.
  • When there is any occasion and you want everything to look fresh.
  • Once in a day . At the most, twice a day.

Anything that goes beyond limit, needs an attention.

The OCD patient should learn the methods of listening to others especially the ones who love you.

Other people should not take the pattern of OCD person lightly. The earlier the treatment or counselling to change the daily habits, the easier it is to live the life for all.
Only one point [1] of Normal Day has been discussed in this chapter. The next points describing Normal Day will be added in the next chapter.

What does anxiety and panic attack feels like?

Anxiety symptoms varies from person to person. There are different levels to it. In certain cases, anxiety is associated with physical illness. In other cases, it is part of mental illness. People had been using the terms nervous and anxiety interchangeably. Slight anxious and nervousness can have a similarity. But anxiety is a separate broad topic. Anxiety is mainly classified into five types. To know detailed information about these types, you can read here :

How does the person feels and goes through the anxiety or panic attack duration? Let’s understand the feelings that is being experienced by the person during the anxiety/panic attack.

What Does Anxiety And Panic Attack Feels Like_

1] Nervousness Vs. Anxiety

Nervousness lasts for few seconds or minutes. Nervousness compared to anxiety is easily possible to overcome. Nervousness is a common natural human reaction while trying things for the first time. It is possible to feel the same usually, but it is not as deep as an anxious feeling.

For e.g. [1]: A student feels nervous to give the presentation on the stage. This student has to wait for his/her turn. Until the turn comes, the student feels nervous. He/She will fear of performing in front of all. He/She will doubt the outcomes of presentation. The person may have bit sweaty hands. The student may share with other friends saying, ”I am feeling nervous, don’t know how will I do it!” This student goes to the stage and gives the presentation well. He/She will even forget that nervousness moment and has moved on with other things of class. In another level of nervousness, some students may make slight mistakes while giving presentation because of tensions and doubts on their ability. These students will also move on with other activities of the class for that day or upcoming days. The ones who makes mistakes , may improve over a period of time.

For e.g. [2]: When a group of people visit adventure places, most of them will try adventure sports for the first time. All of them are excited to enjoy this sport. But, few of them will have nervousness as they will try it for the first time. Once they begin the adventure, nervousness is replaced by happiness.
With these two examples, it is noticeable that nervous feeling is an emotion which is solvable without any efforts.


How does the anxiety feels in the same two situations?

In example one, the student will not have any guts of giving presentation on the stage. This student may have prepared 100% good presentation. He/She has practiced many times with no mistakes at home. He/She scored good at exams and hence, has the potential of giving a good presentation. This student will either have sweaty hands or cold body. The heart beats faster. This person may share with other friends, ”I am feeling nervous, don’t know how will I do it. I can’t do it.” Other friends may boost up the student’s confidence level. But, nothing else works out. Student will hesitate to go on the stage. While giving the presentation, this person will be feeling weak and bit of darkness visuals. He/She may make mistakes. After the presentation, they will still have the symptoms for that day or the week. When another day of presentation comes, all the feelings repeat. Additionally, due to previous presentation mistakes, this time the student will have low esteem. They will start developing fear of stage. The symptoms of anxiety will vary from person to person because it depends on the level of anxiety stages.

In example two:
If this person is afraid of trying out any adventure thing, then he/she may not succeed at it. Their heart beat palpitation increases and may develop stomach pains. By courage, if they succeed at the first time, they will still hold up fear to try it second time and sometimes give it up. Again, the symptoms will vary depending on the level of anxiety.

2] Anxiety Levels

The beginning levels of anxiety which can have similarity with nervousness can be cured with the changes of lifestyles and mind tricks.

Intense anxiety is often experienced at social events, phobia, driving, professional life and any new events of life. Intense anxiety includes fear of doing something or going somewhere.

At the social events, the person may not feel comfortable to get along with the people. An anxiety feeling will make the person feel inferior. The fear of people judging her/his behavior. The thought of, “What if one does not eat well or interact well? ‘’ revolves around the mind. What if one fails to dance or sing or do any group activities. The person can suddenly start showing up anxiety symptoms. The hands are sweaty and the body feels lighter or weak. Vision may feel blurrier. Headache or stomach pains begins. The person feels burdensome to finish food properly. There is a similar feeling of some electric slow waves passing along the body nerves. The person feels an urge to leave the place. He/She loses an interest and wants to find a comfortable place usually, it’s the home. In a number of instances, nausea symptom is developed. A nausea feeling and a dizzy head makes the person uncomfortable to hang around the people. Stomach cramps leading to acidity results in low level energy. It becomes difficult for the person to walk , stand or sit comfortably.

Some people  experience the similar symptoms while driving. An individual may have good driving skills but the anxiety will not let them believe it. They will fear from driving in traffic and slowly they may end up giving up driving. The person shivers before starting a vehicle. While taking out the vehicle, the heart races. While driving, any horn or disturbance on the road can scare the person easily.

3] How anxiety transforms to panic attacks?

When a person experiences anxiety often, they develop  the panic symptom in the next stage. Anxiety has the reasons. The person is self-aware of experiencing anxiety and wants to get rid of it but cannot overcome it. In the beginning levels of anxiety, simple tips and lifestyle changes help but later on medicines are much more required for healing. An untreated anxiety leads to panic attacks. Panic attack can happen during an intense anxiety period. But, panic attacks is also unpredictable. It can happen without any reason , to be precise, during the sleep. People wake up in the middle of night due to panic attack with no reason.  Whilst we may not notice the reason for this attack, there lies an unidentified cause. It can be the result of prolonged anxiety issues. Sometimes it results from physical body stress. People who are mentally strong for a long time, may develop panic attacks as well. Because there is a limit to everything. Therefore, a consistent strong mind may get tired up at some moment.

4] How does a panic attack feels like?

While anxiety can have different tips to help with , the same cannot be true with panic attacks. The practice required to calm these symptoms needs more efforts. Panic attacks generally feels same every time for many people. Every time the person reacts as if it is happening for the first time. They know that it is not the first time and it is temporary moment. Unfortunately, the symptoms will lock the person’s mind which makes them difficult to quickly fix themselves.

Panic attack people struggle for breathing. It can happen during the severe anxiety or during the sleep. Once the person starts breathing faster, he/she gets worried thinking it is the heart attack. The feeling of gasping long air and uncomfortable body makes the person conclude it as a dying moment. The person feels nauseated and may have frequent motions. They feel sweaty and chills. The body trembles. A person feels trapped. The feeling of want to come out of this trapped body but can’t. It is not a paralyzed symptom. The person feels helpless and loneliness. The person misses the ones they love. Everything seems to be overwhelming for those moments. It can last for 20 mins to hours.

Recurring panic attack:
The daily life gets affected with recurring panic attacks. Person easily gets affected with loud sound, fights, scary visuals, bad news, or phobias. The heart pounds instantly. Since, the mind is constantly on alert, the person’s heart pounds immediately even if the person is aware that there is nothing to worry about.


For the Harry Potter fans:
Severe anxiety with Panic attacks can be related to this scene wherein:
Dementors the dark floating creatures approach people or your favorite Harry Potter. They suck happiness , love, positive and peaceful mind. They let your body feel cold and helpless with the pains and fears. You try to survive with faster breathing. You can use the wand and say, “Expecto Patronum” and Boom!  The dementor vanishes.

In reality, we don’t have wands. We have different tips, medicines, and our loved ones to get rid of such panic attacks. Most importantly, it’s [us,we, I ] should work consistently to take care of ourselves and keep ourselves stronger and healthier.

There are levels of anxiety. At different levels, an individual experiences varied symptoms. Sometimes it is possible to control the symptoms sooner. Anxiety can be reduced with the help of someone or through self-relaxing methods. There are wide reasons of developing anxiety. Hence, depending on the reason, the person may or may not need a medical treatment specifically for anxiety. The duration of treatments also differ from person to person. Some anxiety people can develop panic attacks in the future. Panic attacks again vary in symptoms, levels, and reasons. Anxiety and panic attacks occurs due to triggering event and sometimes it can happen without any reason. A hidden reason actually implies stress from physical work and events stored in subconscious mind.

Unexpected anxiety symptoms and panic attack leaves the person in a dubiety. Sometimes people may need to go through emergency admit or immediate medicines. Some people may need assistance of physically present family member , friend or any known person. The times of having someone around is helpful. But, what can one possibly do when he/she is alone at home or any place? How can one manage these symptoms alone at night time?

We cannot depend on others all the time. We may not be staying nearby to the hospitals for an immediate response. At such times, these are the tips which can be followed especially at night time as well as whenever you are alone:

1] Breathe and Count the breathing

Breathing is one of the beneficial exercise to calm down our body from any kind of stress. We say count the breathe and breathe slowly. During the anxiety or panic attacks, the person’s mind is rattled in turn, signaling the physical body to feel uneasiness. Breathing helps in managing the blood pressure levels. This indirectly helps in lowering the restless thoughts.

2] Post Stickers

Begin sticking motivating stickers around your room. Whenever you wake up in the middle of the night with worries or when you are unable to sleep, reading the motivating stickers will relax your mind. If you cannot get easily motivated by common motivation stickers, then write your brave times on stickers/ papers. Reminding yourself of how strong you were, will help you in feeling better again.

3] Post Photo Frames

Similar to putting up stickers, hanging photos of yours or your loved ones will never make you feel lonely. When you watch those photos, your mind will reverse back to positivity and good memories. This will help in cleaning out the darkness moment of anxiety and panic attacks.

4]Stop focusing on anxiety groups

We don’t want to be feel alone. We don’t want to suffer alone. But, there is a fine line between finding people with same illness and promoting the illness. If you think you are suffering from it, then find helpful posts or sources to recover. The better choice is to meet the doctor for the right diagnose. There are groups and forums on internet, wherein people keep writing how they are feeling. Once you know what symptoms you have, focus on how you can improve it. If you keep re-reading other people’s symptoms, there is strong possibility for your mind to behave same.
Negativity is food for anxiety. So, try to keep yourself away from things that can affect you.

5] Display Positive Vibes

Apply positive , motivational or happy wallpapers on your cellphone, desktop or similar devices. Since, majority of the people use screens all the time. These screens can bring a smile on your face often.

6] Food is First-Aid box

Yes, you read it right ! Vitamin deficient people are prone to anxiety triggers. Whether or not you have a vitamin deficiency, this simple diet will help you out. Keep a bowl or a box of fruit beside your bed. Fruits such as Fuji apple and green jujube helps in quick relief to physical symptoms. Any kind of similar juicy and fresh fruits are helpful in lowering anxiety. Do not take citric acid fruits like oranges on empty stomach because it can increase acidity levels. Although oranges are helpful in reducing stress, in taking on an empty acidic stomach is a bad idea. Keep a box of a sandwich or simple bread-jam next to your bed. Make a habit of keeping fruit juice bottles beside your bed. You can even keep dry fruit – raisins. Whenever you have unexpected severe anxiety or panic attacks, these foods supply will help you in an immediate recovery. While many people complain about nausea as one of their symptoms, these simple items will reduce the nausea too.  In case, you have different health issues, then consult your doctor or dietitian to know whether you can have these things . You can ask them for alternative food diet. Lastly, do not forget to drink water frequently. It will keep you hydrated and normalize your pressure levels.

7] Best Friend Diary

Make a habit of writing good moments of your life, positive thoughts, and inspirational stories in your diary. When you read these things, it is possible to relax your mind to some extent. You can always keep this diary closer to your bed. You can even carry it with you when you are traveling or staying alone some where else.

8] Long- distance is not a problem.

We cannot depend on everyone. Not everyone will be present physically around us all the time. But, given a chance of having access to technology devices, we can try to connect with our people. Make a call or send a message to your family or a friend. Tell them how you are feeling. Due to long -distance they may not be in a position to help you immediately. So, ask them to talk with you about anything. It will help you to divert your mind. Eventually, you will get involved with the discussion which will help in the reduction of anxiety levels.

9] Refresh Yourself

Most people find it difficult to wake up from bed. Some even get motions and vomiting. If you are able to get up from bed after following above methods or taking medications, wash your face. People get giddiness after using toilet. Wash your hands and legs , as they get sweaty (Symptom). Wash your face and drink lots of water. This simple thing will refresh you and make it easier to sleep.

10] Watch a show or walk

Going out at night will not be a safest idea for your health condition and maybe your location safety status. Anxiety will not go off suddenly. Once you feel a bit better or when anxiety reduces slowly, you can take little walks inside your room or home.  This will make you  feel strong physically. Watching any entertainment show is one of the way to keep you happy. Once you are involved in watching good shows or having a laugh, anxiety will slowly vanish.


For the Harry Potter fans:

Imagine anxiety/panic phase as a Boggart. It will show you the fearful things. But, one could use the wand by saying the Boggart-banishing spell “”Riddikulus””. The fearful thing vanishes.
In the same way, whenever you get anxiety/panic, try to remember all the good memories and best moments. Try to imagine the things you would love to do. It is difficult to remember and focus, but trying can helps out a lot to relax the mind. Your mind needs to be changed into a happier feeling.


All the tips listed here are helpful in recovery and avoiding the unwanted anxiety moment. While these suggestions are helpful, it may not work out with everyone. But, these simple methods have the ability to bring out the change in you. Finding methods to get you into a comfortable zone is necessary to stay away from anxiety. All you have to do is, follow the ways to improve a healthy mind and do not indulge in the depths of the sources that bring you down. Try repeating / reminding yourself, “Worrying will not get you anywhere. Whatever is meant to happen, will happen.”

A Tortured Life

This heavy weight title immerses one into a wide range of imaginations and experiences. An unendurable pain, that one waits to be freed for a long time.


Is the experience of torture counted based on the amount of time one goes through it?
A torture can vary from few minutes to a lifelong depending on the experiences.
Why being tortured is the worst thing that can happen to anyone?
Once the person is free from torture, can they live a better life again?
How is the post – torture life?
In what manner , the two words : Torture and Trauma are inter-related?
Any kind of tortured life occurs between two persons or between a person and a surrounding environment. Most of the times, it is observable that the person who tortures someone is enjoying the moment of seeing that person in a trouble. Torture is a form of abuse. On another hand, some people without moral ethics or the ones without good mentality tend to torture others unknowingly.  The chances of a victim escaping are less from the people who do not accept their heart-breaking actions. Apart from these contexts, there is another set of people who can easily feel tortured by anyone. Sensitive people can misunderstand other’s actions without logic. It is possible for them to feel tortured in their life for the things that may not even run in other people’s mind.


A trauma affects the people after particular events. Whereas a torture can be one time or a recurring action experienced by the victim. Depending on the level of tortures and its effects on the person, the life changes. Some people may begin to love a new life after taking certain treatments. One may move to another place and restart life. It is not possible for many people to live a life normally again. A consistent tortured life affects the person mentally and physically. Even a stronger person can slowly change into a weak person. Over a period of time, it won’t be possible for the brain to have a control over emotions despite of having a stronger personality.

The victim will lose an interacting skill. Few lose their confidence to speak with others. Some feel numb. While some victims lose interest to interact with anyone. They feel hopeless and hence, may fail to enjoy the good times.  This makes them avoid social mingling. Sometimes, the person may like to meet others. But, during the meetings, anxiety can have the chances of turning in.

After moving to another place away from the tortures, the life cannot be all easy. It takes time to adjust to the new beginnings. The person feels depressed and anxious. The emotions will have confusions. Even if the place is a favorite and free from troubles, the past moments flashes in the mind. A victim can often hear the same sounds of the tormentors, especially ,if the tormentor is /are family member/s. Sometimes the tormentors are extremely dependent on the victim. Because of a prolonged dependency, even if the victim looks out for an independent life, in post traumatic period, the life seems to be unbalanced.  Loneliness is the only best friend. The victim feels isolated in daily life. The things that made one happier before will no longer feel the same. Although at times, it is possible for the victim to be immensely happy for the little things.

Hearing any loud sound can make the heart pound. Since, the subconscious mind has stored enough of unpleasant memories, the person will have sleeping disorders. It is a sign of alert mind 24/7 .  A psychological stress affects the health in a severe way. An exhausting mind stress develops hormonal imbalance and gut dysfunctions. This leads to a multiple chronic physical illness. Even if the person has the capability to live an independent life, a psychological effects develops unreasonable fears in the person’s mind.   • The foremost important thing is- do not blame the victim in any circumstances.
  • Listen to the whole story patiently. (Listen only when the person is ready to share it.) Do not force an individual to describe everything at once. Give them time.
  • Do not comment on her provocative attire.
  • Help her follow up any physical or mental checkup needs.
  • Keep telling victim you are there with her and she should not be scared of anyone.
  • Try to find out the attacker and lodge a complaint.
  • Make sure you help her out to get justice. If ever she decides to give up the process of law, motivate her to continue the process to win the case. If she does not want to proceed further, don’t force her.
  • Whether or not the victim  gets the justice, give her mental therapy every day until she manages to live by herself.
  • Do not gossip about the incidence to others unless the victim is comfortable with it.
  • Furthermore, if you see the victim has moved on, then do not remind them of the past life again and again. As no one forgets the past life, but it is more depressing when the topic is been brought up often leading to get hurt .
  • Some women may make life changes due to the incidence, support her.
  • If the victim is comfortable, help her by setting up or join a support group for her to recover.
